What the @*#& are we doing?

So it's the middle of night 1 in NZ. Why am I awake you may ask? Well, it's fucking freezing. I am currently in the internet/TV room at our motor park in Lake Tekapo (which is stunningly gorgeous) trying to regain the feeling in my feet. What better time to write a blog entry?

So, yeah. I knew we were getting here in the end of winter. I don't think I fully appreciated how cold it would be at night. It doesn't help that the best route for us is to go south first which, because we're in the southern hemisphere, means it gets colder the further down we go.

Our campervan is not a camper. We have a sink and a camping stove but that's it. We don't plug in at night. No heat. Actually, we decided yesterday that we're lucky when it starts. Ha. Evan has a super-duper sleeping bag and just before I left the van a bit ago he told me he was cold. I do not have a super-duper sleeping bag (trust me, I'm buying one today) and this is what I'm wearing: 2 pairs of wool socks, yoga pants, sweat pants, tshirt, hoodie (hood on), fleece jacket, fleece vest, waterproof rain jacket (hood on), fleece winter hat, gloves. Most of my body could have made it through the night. I am notorious for my cold feet however and they've taken it to a whole new level. I can almost feel my big toes again and I'm sitting in front of a space heater. Been here for about 20 mins. All I hope is that I don't somehow get in trouble for stealing their heat at almost 4 a.m.

I am going to buy supplies today but I need to talk to Evan about our plans. 1st, we need to address how not to freeze to death at night. Whether it's hostels or buying and rigging some sort of heating device...I will not end up having to amputate my toes. Next, I'm not sure we'll be able to do as many multi-day hikes as we want right away. My vote is to wait a couple weeks til we get a bit more into spring and a bit back north again. I know Evan isn't going to budge easily on this but neither of us did our research and we are not prepared enough for this type of weather.

If it wasn't still gorgeous and exciting here I'd be on the next flight back to Philly. I know we can make it work somehow...just 33 days of not freezing to death until we fly to Australia. Haha.

Think I can sleep a couple hours on the couch in here?
