Well, we mostly solved the cold sleeping problem with a sleeping bag for me and a space heater for the van. All we need is a proper RV power cord. We were able to borrow 1 at the last site in Oamaru but I don't know if we'll be that lucky moving forward.
We've been in Dunedin, a coastal college-ish town, since yesterday and we're spending our 2 nights here at a hostel called Hogwartz. For now, other than the shower room, we're warm. And actually, it's really nice out today. We're in the "octagon," or town center. Evan is laid out in the grass.
Dunedin is an odd place. Everyone is either a surfer or wearing skinny jeans and/or some punk rock attire. We walked forever yesterday to see the steepest street in the world but ended up being more fascinated by the tour bus packed with Asians.
Today we drove out to the Otago Peninsula and, again, felt like there wasn't much going on there. That's until we found Sandfly Bay and the sea lions. Tons and tons of sea lions riding the waves lazily into the beach and sprawling out to soak up the afternoon sun. Between the sea lions and the plethora of sheep (and LAMBS!!!) I'm in animal heaven. I keep forgetting to catch them on my phone camera but I will eventually.
Hopefully we can hang onto the sunshine and spring temperatures as we drive to Te Anau (sp?) tomorrow. Te Anau is where we pick up the Kepler Track. It's a 3-4 day hike that sounds amazing. I am a little nervous, mostly about the nighttime camping temperatures. There are huts but after that brutal 1st night I'm still a little worried.
That's about it. Our campervan has some interesting kinks but it seems to still be a good choice...assuming it continues to start. I'm a little frustrated that I can't find free wifi anywhere, even in the cities but I guess I'm supposed to be less phone reliant anyway.
